Microalgae

Through the process of photosynthesis that microalgae developed 3 billion years ago, they provide us with over 50% of the oxygen on the Planet. They are the basis of the aquatic food chain. They are also the origin of all fertile soils, essential in the formation of biological soil crusts. We owe them our lives, but they can also improve them.

Thanks to their rich biochemical composition, unique properties and immense biodiversity, microalgae are a raw material of utmost strategic value to develop products that are sustainable and beneficial to humans in various sectors.

Today, microalgae are being already commercialized in sectors such as agriculture, nutrition, cosmetics, pharma and aquaculture, and their application is being studied in fields like biomaterials and bioenergy sector, as precursors of sustainable and inexhaustible biofuels. However, out of the approximately 70 000 microalgae species known to humans currently, only 0.04% are being used commercially. Their potential is unlimited.

MICROALGAE CULTIVATION TECHNOLOGY

AlgaEnergy produces advanced solutions for agriculture, based on a careful selection of microalgae species with proven agronomic interest grown in its own facilities, equipped with disruptive and proprietary technologies developed in-house, by leveraging more than 50 years of Research & Innovation in the space of microalgae science.

We use specifically-designed cultivation systems called photobioreactors to produce our own raw material, microalgae biomass, under fully controlled and optimized conditions. This ensures the maximum level of quality, traceability and homogenization, resulting in a natural, clean and noble raw material. At this step, our microalgae species are grown in semi-continuous monoculture systems, to assure the optimal parameters for every species in absence of any contaminations. Later on, they can be combined with other microalgae species depending on the final product.

BIOCONVERSION TECHNOLOGY

The UPT® (Ultimate Performance Technology) is an innovative proprietary technology developed by AlgaEnergy, allowing the generation of final solutions based on a high-quality microalgae biomass which, submitted to further biocatalytic processes, results in products with valuable novel bioactivities.

UPT ® has been developed during a decade of intense applied research and stands out from market standards, as it is a biological process instead of a physical or chemical one, which ensures the stability and high bioactivity of the compounds in the final products.

The UPT® platform integrates knowledge, technology and carefully designed protocols that are applied throughout the value chain, rigorously controlling the acting bioprocesses at every stage. Depending on the final product’s function and the crop genes targeted by AlgaEnergy’s solution, the microalgae biomass combination and the UPT® protocol conditions will vary.
